Getting Started

The courses listed below are the Required Core Program Entrance Courses for the Surgical Technology program and must be completed prior to entering the core course work of the program. Check the class schedule to see which classes are offered. These classes may be waived based on your previous education whether at Las Positas College or another college. Review of your transcript and consultation with a counselor will determine and develop your Student Education Plan for completion of the Surgical Technology program.

Required Core Program Entrance Courses*:
(Before taking SURG 50):

  • Biology 31 (Introduction to College Biology) - 4 units
  • Anatomy 1 (General Human Anatomy) -  5 units
  • English 1A (Critical Reading and Composition) -  3 units
  • Mathematics 65 (Elementary Algebra) -  5 units
  • Health 51A** (Basic Medical Terminology) – 4 units
    • {or} Health 52** (Basic Medical Terminology for Allied Health) – 3 units

      *The Required Core Program Entrance Courses must be met prior to enrollment in the Associates of Science Major Surgical Technology or the Surgical Technology Certificate.

      **May be taken prior to or concurrently with the
      Surgical Technology 50

      Background Check Screening Process

NOTE: There is an application process for the Surgical Technology Program. For detailed information regarding the application process, please refer to the Surgical Technology Application Packet, which can be downloaded on this webpage or picked up in person at the Office of Allied Health (Building 2100); in the Counseling Office (Building 700); or in the Admission & Records Office (Building 700).
