Learning Skills Courses
Students with possible learning disabilities must be evaluated in our diagnostic testing course, Learning Skills 116. Students receive one unit of college credit.
Students with a documented learning disability may choose to take one or more of the following courses.
Learning Skills 116: Diagnostic Testing
Determination of eligibility for learning skills services through diagnostic
testing. Includes state mandated tests. Focus on compensatory methods as derived
from test results. Units: 1.0
Learning Skills 117 : Reading
Preparation for reading success in college level English. Emphasis on learning
skills in reading comprehension, decoding, and vocabulary through extensive
reading and practice exercises. Prerequisites: Learning Skills 116 (may be
taken concurrently) and recommendation of Learning Skills 116 instructor.
Units: 3.0
Learning Skills 118: Writing
Preparation for writing success in college-level English. Emphasis on learning
skills in sentence parts, paragraph construction, and essay writing assignments.
Prerequisites: Learning Skills 116 (may be taken concurrently) and recommendation
of Learning Skills 116 instructor. Units: 3.0
Learning Skills 119: Math
Preparation for problem solving success in college. Emphasis on learning skills
in quantitative reasoning abilities needed to process and integrate word problems
and related problem solving tasks. Prerequisites: Learning Skills 116 (may
be taken concurrently) and recommendation of Learning Skills instructor. Units:
3.0
Learning Skills 120: Computers
This course offers specialized computer instruction for students with disabilities.
There will be an emphasis on individual learning styles, keyboarding skills,
and software mastery. Strongly recommended: Learning Skills 116.
Course Objectives:
- Become familiar with your personal learning style, strengths, and weaknesses
- Improve keyboarding skills
- Develop a working knowledge of the following applications: MS Word, MS Excel, Kurzweil, Dragon Naturally Speaking, JAWS and Inspiration.
To register for Learning Skills 120, students must have completed Learning Skills 116 or must make arrangements with the instructor. Units: 1.0
Learning Skills 9: Colloquium-Learning Skills
This course is designed to assist persons with disabilities or who are clients
of the Department of Rehabilitation with job seeking skills. The class offers
vocational and career assessments along with job searching techniques. Units:
